Best QB situation in the NFL?

We all saw the Pats game last week. Tom Terrific was suited up but didn't see any game time which gave Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett a chance to show what they can do.

Hoyer has had some opportunities in the past which have led to rumors that he could be the next Kevin Kolb. A backup who impresses in the Preseason and could wind up being a starter on some other team.

Hoyer was comfortable and confident to start the game. He looked good in the pocket and showed he has the ability to step up and make big passes into the teeth of the defense, even with pressure. He's mobile and can throw on the run, probably the one advantage he has over number 12.

But the real story here is obviously Ryan Mallett. Scouts knocked him for his lack of mobility in the pocket and his "character issues." He got into some trouble early in his college career (public intoxication) but that has nothing to do with what type of quarterback he is.

Roddy White said it better than anyone when he tweeted that Mallett was the best rookie QB on the field that night. On several plays he showed that he could shift in the pocket, readjust his position to avoid the sack, something Tom Brady has long been an expert in. It's all about those small adjustments, that footwork.

After spending his freshman year at the University of Michigan Mallett transferred to the University of Arkansas. Both schools run complex, pro style offenses and its clear thats made it easier for him to make the transition to the NFL.

Last Thursday night he showed off how quickly hes coming along. He finished 12/19 for 164 yards and 1 TD. He was getting the ball out of his hand quickly, didn't get sacked once, and took care of the football. He was making good reads and didn't feel the need to make the big play, a mistake often made by rookie QB's in their first preseason action.

Hoyer and Mallett were good enough to put 47 points up on the board. God forbid TFB ever be seriously injured again but if that worst case scenario should arise it's comforting to know we have two great security blankets.
